Bobrisky may find himself spending the Eid-il-Fitr celebration in detention.

Nigerian controversial crossdresser Okuneye Idris Olanrewaju, popularly known as Bobrisky, is facing the possibility of spending the 2024 Eid-il-Fitr break in detention. Bobrisky was arrested on April 3 and subsequently convicted by a Federal High Court in Lagos on April 5, 2024.

Facing charges related to naira abuse brought forth by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Bobrisky encountered six counts, with the first four addressing naira abuse and the remaining two pertaining to alleged money laundering.

During court proceedings, the EFCC prosecutor moved to dismiss counts five and six. Bobrisky pleaded guilty to the four-count charge of naira abuse.

Expressing a desire for leniency, Bobrisky cited being unaware of the laws regarding naira abuse and vowed to educate his social media followers on the matter. “I am a social media influencer with over five million followers. I would do a video on my page, and I would educate people about spraying money. I will not repeat it, my Lord. I regret my actions, my Lord. I am a first-time offender,” Bobrisky stated in court.

As a result, Justice Abimbola Awogboro scheduled April 9, 2024, for sentencing and ordered Bobrisky to remain in EFCC custody until then.

However, it’s worth noting that the Federal Government declared April 9 and 10, 2024, as public holidays to commemorate the Eid-el-Fitr celebration. Given this, Bobrisky’s scheduled sentencing on April 9 coincides with the Eid-il-Fitri break, making the hearing unlikely to proceed unless Justice Awogboro decides otherwise.

Consequently, Bobrisky is expected to spend the holiday period in detention.
