Louis van Gaal is the current head coach of the Netherlands national football team and a former player from the Netherlands. He has managed Ajax, Barcelona, AZ Alkmaar, Bayern Munich, and Manchester United at the club level, as well as the Netherlands national team three times. He briefly worked for AZ before returning to Ajax to work as Leo Beenhakker’s assistant. In 1991, Van Gaal took over as manager after Beenhakker resigned.

Van Gaal had a highly productive run as Ajax’s manager from 1991 until 1997. Three times under Van Gaal, in 1994, 1995 (notably finishing the full season undefeated in both the league and the Champions League), and 1996, Ajax won the Eredivisie.  In addition, he helped Ajax win the Johan Cruyff Shield in 1993, 1994, and 1995 as well as the KNVB Cup in 1993.

Ajax won the UEFA Cup in 1992 and the UEFA Champions League in 1995 after defeating Milan in the championship match. After the second victory, Real Zaragoza was defeated 5-1 overall in the 1995 UEFA Super Cup. Ajax won the Intercontinental Cup in late 1995 by defeating the Brazilian team Grêmio on penalties. After losing to Juventus on penalties in 1996, Ajax finished second in the Champions League. Van Gaal made a comeback from retirement on August 4, 2021, to lead the Netherlands national team for the third time. He succeeded Frank de Boer, who resigned from his job in June after the team’s unsuccessful Euro 2020 campaign. On September 1, 2021, Van Gaal’s third tenure with the Netherlands national team began with a 1-1 draw against Norway.
