The Nigerian music industry like every other sector was no doubt badly hit in the year 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic and other issues that troubled the country.

However, it also seemed to be a year of great discovery in the music industry owing to the number of break out stars that fans were blessed with as well as beautiful music from other top artistes.


The list below is not in any particular order and we were very careful in picking out our Top 16 from top music charts and feedback from listeners on Soloplay.

1. Godly by Omah Lay:

Omah Lay is a sensational artiste and one of the few break out star in year 2020 that took everybody by storm.

His growth seemed organic as people identified with him strictly based in the quality of his music.

Godly was released late in November and in no time, the track became an anthem and it was one of the many songs from his body of work to blow people’s minds away.

The song was taken off his second extended playlist titled What Have We Done and it consists of 5 solid tracks.

2. Smile by Wizkid

Wizkid is no doubt one Nigerian artiste that is greatly loved by his fans. Even though his newly released Made In Lagos Album was trailed by mixed reactions, a number of people have agreed that his Smile track was a good one.

The vibe of this particular song is top notch because everyone can relate to the concept of the song.

Sensational artiste, H.E.R also delivered a very cool verse and kudos to the writers of this song, Eight9FLY, H.E.R. and Wizkid.

3. Fem by Davido:

DMW boss, Davido’s Fem, is one song that has become a household song for many Nigerians and it appears it would remain that way for a long time.

Even though some fans held the opinion that it was a diss track aimed at Burna Boy, it still hasn’t diminished their love for it.

The song was greatly accepted and was even used to make political statements at protests.

The song was the first track on his A Better Time Album and no doubt, one of the banging songs on the street this year.

4. Nobody by DJ Neptune featuring Joeboy and Mr Eazi:

Multi talented Nigerian artiste, DJ Neptune released this track early 2020 and till tomorrow, this is a song everybody still vibe to.

This track has been said to have replay value and an easy one to love. The music creators banked on this and had a remix done in almost every language imaginable.

A remix was also done with BBNaija 2020 winner, Laycon.

5. Infinity by Olamide ft. Omah Lay:

Olamide has no doubt paid his dues in the industry and is no stranger to making hits.

On this track, he also featured fast-rising star, Omah Lay.

Off his Carpe Diem Album Olamide Badoo was able to give us another street banger titled Infinity.

The penetration is huge as it gained big number of downloads and streams in short period of time on music platforms.

6. Woman by Rema:

Mavin Records star, Rema, had an amazing year 2019 and he did not stop in 2020. His song, Woman, was greatly accepted by fans and said to be very relatable.

It was even reported here on Topcityvibe that Manchester United midfielders, Paul Pogba and Eric Bailly were caught on camera enjoying the rhythm and doing the ‘Gbese’ dance step.

7. Abule by Patoranking:

Popular Nigerian reggae-dancehall star, Patoranking, also impressed many with this song and it was arguably one of the top songs this year.

Make I tell you wetin happen for Abule

The song did not only got beyond a danceable street song, it fits into all comical skits and it’s well relatable.

There is no doubt, Patoranking is a General when it comes to dropping Lamba for the streets.

8. Duduke by Simi:

Sensational Simi has a sweet voice and thanks to Oscar, this song was a huge success.

This song no doubt had many people wishing they were pregnant as they joined in on the baby bump challenge that rocked social media.

The music star released the song to announce the birth of her first child, Adejare.

9. Way Too Big by Burna Boy:

Grammy nominated Nigerian star, Burna Boy, ushered in his Twice As Tall album with the release of this song.

Even though some fans held the opinion that it was a diss track aimed at Davido, it still hasn’t diminished their love for it.

The wordplay and flow of this track is topnotch and the street has no choice than to accept it.

10. Away by Oxlade:

This is another song that came and took the industry by storm especially from a breakout artiste.

Oxlade came in with no rush and with his own sound.

The song was taken off his extended playlist titled Oxygen and it’s still buzzing our speakers.

11. Maserati Remix by Olakira featuring Davido:

This is another song that is nothing less of a jam. It was an anthem on the streets and greatly loved by many.

It even earned the singer the attention of Davido who featured on the remix.

12. Geng by Mayorkun:

Mayorkun has no doubt earned himself the description of an A-list artiste going by his stunts in the music industry this year.

It appears everything he touched turned to gold and all his songs were greatly accepted by fans.

13. Ma Pariwo by Zinoleesky:

This newbie in the industry is signed on to Naira Marley’s Marlian Records and his song, Ma Pariwo, is still a street banger.

The song got so much acceptance from audience both home and abroad, even despite the lockdown of clubs and social venues all over the country but the song still reached the desired audience.

14. Zoom by Cheque:

Another hot track in year 2020 is Zoom. It took a while for many music lovers to realise that it was a Nigerian song.

Unknown to many, Cheque is also signed on to Phyno’s music label.

15. Cash App by Bella Schmurda:

Another breakout star this year who took many by storm with his song. The song appears to have been a massive hit.

The song ‘Cash App’ is a freestyle with dope relative rap verses and banging beat produced by Drey Spencer.

16. Koroba by Tiwa Savage:

Top Nigerian music star, Tiwa Savage, released an album this year and Koroba was one of the tracks.

It has been a greatly accepted song.

17. Ko Por Ke (KPK) by Rexxie featuring Mohbad:

Street song is based on the acceptability and penetration within a short period, Ko Por Ke (KPK) by hit maker producer Rexxie and rising star Mohbad is a testimony to this fact.

The instant hit was officially released on December 4th 2020 with massive acceptance. Rexxie jumped on the Amapiano vibes to give us a December banger.

The penetration is huge as it gained big number of downloads and streams in short period of time on music platforms.

Fun Fact:- The most used slang in Nigeria currently is KPK.

18. Ponmo Sweet by Mohbad

Marlians and other lovers of street music were quick to catch the “Ponmo” vibe because the lyrics are what street guys want to hear about girls who use “Kayanmata” and Pu$$y sweetener.

19. If No Be You by Jamopyper

Zanku Record act, Jamo Pyper sought to create a long lasting imprint in the minds of music lovers with this impressive love song featuring Mayorkun.

The song which hit the industry in August, 25th 2020 became an instant on the street and where just because the lyrics were so relatable.

Truth be told, Mansa Jabulani actually mudered the beat thereby making it easier for Jamo Pyper and Mayorkun to deliver their best.

20. Kokanmi by Qdot

When you talk about street Jamz, there is no way you will not mention Q-Dot and his consistent releases.

Off his Alagbe album Q-dot was able to give us another street banger titled Ah!, which was released in the month of September 2020

The song ‘Ah!’ is a freestyle with dope relative rap verses and banging beat produced by Street hit makers 2TBoyz.

It also talks about daily circumstances that will make you wonder ‘Ah! how do people even do this?’

The wordplay and flow of this Hip-pop freestyle is topnotch and the street has no choice than to accept it.

Ah! has 100% street vibe as Q-dot was kind enough to shoot the video in the south-western part of Nigeria, Lagos Ikorodu.

The natural vibing of random people to the song further proves this.
