Bruno Latour Career, What was his profession?

We Have Never Been Modern (1991; English version, 1993), Laboratory Life (with Steve Woolgar, 1979), and Science in Action are his best-known works (1987). Although Latour’s investigations of scientific practice were once connected with social constructionist approaches to the philosophy of science, he has since drifted dramatically from such methods. He is most recognized for rejecting the subjective/objective dichotomy and re-creating the approach to work in practice.

In 2017, Latour stated that he is interested in helping to reestablish faith in science and that part of science’s authority has to be returned. Latour, along with Michel Callon and John Law, is one of the primary developers of actor-network theory (ANT), a constructionist approach influenced by Harold Garfinkel’s ethnomethodology, Algirdas Julien Greimas’ generative semiotics, and (more recently) Émile Durkheim’s rival Gabriel Tarde’s sociology.

Latour first studied philosophy as a student. He finished second and then first (reçu second, premier) in the French national competitive test (agrégation/CAPES de philosophie) in 1971-1972. Michel Serres had a big effect on him. [Citation required] In 1975, Latour received his Ph.D. in philosophical theology from the University of Tours. His dissertation was titled Exégèse et ontologie: une étude des textes de résurrection (Exegesis and Ontology: An Analysis of the Texts of Resurrection).

Interested in Anthropology

With a growing interest in anthropology, Latour conducted research in the Ivory Coast and wrote a brief monograph on decolonization, race, and labor relations as a consequence. After working at the Centre de Sociologie de l’innovation at the École des Mines in Paris for more than 20 years (1982–2006), Latour relocated to Sciences Po in 2006 and became the first holder of a chair named for Gabriel Tarde.

He has most recently been one of the curators of popular art shows at the Zentrum für Kunst und Medientechnologie in Karlsruhe, Germany, such as “Making Things Public” (2002) and “Iconoclash” (2005).

He also held the University of Amsterdam’s Spinoza Chair of Philosophy in 2005. On May 22, 2008, Latour received an honorary degree from the Université de Montréal. This was done in conjunction with a symposium on organizational communication honoring the work of James R. Taylor, who Latour has had a significant impact.

In addition to the Légion d’Honneur of France, he also holds many additional honorary doctorates (2012). On November 24, 2020, Bruno Latour will receive the “Spinozalens 2020” from the Dutch “International Spinozaprijs Foundation.” He was awarded the Kyoto Prize in the “Thought and Ethics” category in 2021.
