Greif was born in a residence that had once belonged to Anne Boleyn as a gift from King Henry VIII in Sawbridgeworth, Hertfordshire, England.

He received his education at Sloane Grammar School, where he excelled in swimming and athletics while also representing the college and the county at events held at the White City Stadium, among other venues.

Before applying to theater school, he temporarily attended the Regent Street Polytechnic and worked in a variety of positions, including as a troubleshooter at a TV and radiogram manufacturer and negotiator in a small West End real estate firm.
